3 May 2016 Balance Changes

3 May 2016 - Balance Changes

In this round of balance changes we're taking a look at the Mortar, defensive gameplay in general and making the Royal Giant great again!

Balance Changes

Mortar: Deployment time increased to 5 sec (from 3 sec), damage decreased by 10%
- For a building with both offensive and defensive capabilities, the Mortar is currently too strong and offers too much value for 4 Elixir. Its use rate in Arena 8 is a bit high for such a specialized, and contentious, card. Additionally, we wanted to take into consideration that when the new Tournament Rules come into play, Mortars will be capped at level 9 instead of level 8.

Clash Royale Tactic Verdict - Mortar will become 99% unplayable.

Bomb Tower: Lifetime decreased to 40sec (from 60sec)
- The Bomb Tower is a bit too dominant and difficult to deal with in the low to mid Arenas currently. A lower lifetime will help with this and also bring it more in line with the other defensive buildings.

Clash Royale Tactic Verdict - Bomb Tower was mainly popular because of its 60sec lifetime and ability to counter hut tactic or large group of troops. Unless lots of players use hut tactic, Bomb Tower will not be a good choice.

Elixir Collector: Hitpoints decreased by 20%
- The Elixir Collector's use rate is very high at the top and feels like too much of an obvious choice in many decks. Additionally, being able to use it as a distraction and damage absorber is interesting, but it’s a bit too good at the latter right now. Less hitpoints should remedy this.

Clash Royale Tactic Verdict - Still playable but throwing Fireball at the Collector will be better trade than previously.

Cannon: Hitpoints decreased by 11%
- The Cannon simply offers too much value for 3 Elixir.

Clash Royale Tactic Verdict - Tesla may become a better replacement of Cannon.

Royal Giant: Range increased by 1
- The Royale Giant's low use rate shows that he hasn’t yet found his purpose. A longer range will allow him to outrange most defensive buildings and make him the demolitionist he was born to be!

Clash Royale Tactic Verdict - Will see more Royal Giant in action, better prepare to counter him in some occassion.

Mirror: Common and Rare Cards mirrored 1 level higher
- This change will mean a Tournament Rules level Mirror (4), mirrors all card rarities to their respective Tournament Rules levels (1, 4, 7, 9); and a max level Mirror (8), mirrors max level cards. It should also help boost the Mirror’s overall value and appeal.

Clash Royale Tactic Verdict - Mirror will be more powerful and good choice in some decks.

Valkyrie: Will be affected by pushback (e.g. when hit by Fireball)
- When a rather large Fireball lands on your face you should feel it, and look as though you felt it. The Valkyrie is tough as nails, but she’s not that tough. This change is for consistency with all other small to medium sized troops.

Mini P.E.K.K.A: Will be affected by pushback (e.g. when hit by Fireball)
- Same as above.

Range Values (all units): Fixed
- We fixed a bug where the handling of attack ranges wasn't consistent with different sized units. Due to this the range values will appear to be smaller than before for some units in the next update, but their ranges are all effectively the same as before.
- One example of this is when two units with the same range encountered each other, they didn’t always attack at the same time - this has been fixed.
- Also, the King Tower's range seen here appears to have been decreased, but it hasn't! And likewise with the Royal Giant, we're increasing his range by 1, but his info screen will show a range of 6.5 in the next update - even though it has increased by 1!

Chests

In Clash Royale, it’s all about Chests. Because Chests are your main source to obtain the Cards and Golds.
Chests
  • Earn Chests to unlock rewards, collect new Cards and upgrade existing Cards.
  • Silver, Golden, Giant, Magical and Super Magicl Chests are earned by winning battles after the Tutorial
    • Super Magical Chest contain better rewards than Magical Chest
    • Magical Chest contain better rewards than Golden Chest
    • Golden Chests contain better rewards than Silver Chest
  • Destroy opponent’s tower and win Crown to earn Crown Chest.
  • A Free Chest is obtained every four hours which contains Gold, Gems and Cards, and holds a maximum of 2 Free Chests.
  • All Chests have better rewards at higher Arenas.
  • Any Chest can contain an EPIC Card.
  • Any Chest from Arena 5 onward can contain a LEGENDARY Card.
  • Chest will give you Cards from your current Arena and below. For example, Arena 3 Chest will contain any Cards from Training Camp, Arena 1, 2 and 3.

Chest types

1) Free Chest

Who said “there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch”? Well, here comes the Free Chest. Every 4 hours, the timer will run down, then you can open Free Chest for free.

If you do not open the Free Chest immediately, there is a hidden timer behind the scene to countdown another 4 hours, this can stack up to 2 Free Chests. Basically you can be absent from the game for 8 hours continuously without losing Free Chest, allow you to work, sleep or do whatever more important in real life. Since Free Chest timer cannot be sped up or changed, player can get maximum of 6 Free Chests per day. If you can open the game only twice a day (morning and evening), you will get at least 4 Free Chests per day.

Free Chest contain Golds and Cards as same as Silver Chest, and may contain Gems. Amount of Golds and Cards depend on which Arena you are when you open the Free Chest.

2) Crown Chest

Crown Chest contain Golds and Cards as same as Golden Chest, and may contain Gems. Amount of Golds and Cards depend on which Arena you are when you open the Crown Chest.

Crown Chest is available every 24 hours, imagine the Crown Chest as the daily quest. In battle, destroying opponent’s tower to earn Crown, earning 10 Crowns to unlock the Crown Chest for rewards. While you are collecting the Crown, there is a hidden timer behind the scene to countdown the next 24 hours. Basically, as long as you can collect 10 Crowns within 24 hours, you will not delay the Crown Chest timer. Player can get maximum of 1 Crown Chest per day.

3) Silver/Golden/Giant/Magical/Super Magical Chest

Silver/Golden/Gaint/Magical/Super Magical Chest contain Golds and Cards, but do not contain Gems. Amount of Golds and Cards depend on which Arena your battle take place.

Chests won from battle are based on the Arena you fought in. This is why you may receive Chest from higher Arena. For example, you are at Arena 5 but get match with player from Arena 6, if you win the battle, you will receive the Arena 6 Chest. See the Chest table for reward details.

<ChestTable.png>

You have 4 Chest slots, so you can hold maximum of 4 Chests at any given time. If you have available (empty) Chest slot, you will receive Chest after you win the battle. Unlocking the Chests will earn you Golds and Cards, and free up Chest slot. Unlocking Silver/Golden/Giant/Magical/Super Magical Chests take 3/8/12/12/24 hours. Unlocking time can be sped up by Gems at a linear cost of 1 Gem per 10 minutes.

4 Chest Slots
Super Magical Chest is ready to be opened, while Silver Chest is in unlocking process

Chest Cycle

There is a 240-Chest-Cycle which has exact order of Chest you will receive. The 240-Chest-Cycle contains 180 Silver Chests (75.00%), 54 Golden Chests (22.50%), 3 Giant Chests (1.25%), and 3 Magical Chests (1.25%).
  • Giant Chests are at 52th, 151st, and 191st Chest order.
  • Magical Chests are at 12th, 132th, and 204th Chest order.
  • Super Magical Chests is not guarantee in the Chest Cycle, and will drop at random.
Another way to obtain the Chests is buying from the Shop. Note that Chests bought from Shops will be instantly opened. Giant Chest is good if you want quantity over quality because it contain lots of Gold and Cards but no EPIC guarantee. Magical Chest guarantee EPIC Card in the Chest, while Super Magical Chest is like, well, Super Magical.

4) Wooden Chest (Tutorial)

During Tutorial, you will earn Wooden Chest from each battle with AI computer. It takes 15 seconds to open each Wooden Chest. You will receive many COMMON and RARE Cards to start up your Card Collection, and guarantee 1 EPIC Card which will be either Prince, Witch, Baby Dragon or Skeleton Army.

23 Mar 2016 Balance Changes

23 March 2016 - Balance Changes

Card balance in Clash Royale is a combination of playtesting and looking at the stats - in particular, card use rates and win rates across all levels of play. You can expect monthly balance changes to keep gameplay fine tuned and as fun as possible.

One of our core design principles is "offense over defense", which you'll no doubt hear us reference many times. We're not entirely there yet, but we'll be vigilantly tweaking and tuning cards in that general direction.

In this batch of changes we're primarily looking to address a few frustrating defensive combinations and some underused cards:

Balance Changes

X-Bow: Range decreased to 12 (from 13)
- We want to open the X-Bow up to a little bit more counterplay. A range reduction will mean you can no longer position it behind a Tesla, as well as across the river, and still hit your opponent's tower!

Tesla: Hit speed decreased to 0.8sec (from 0.7sec), lifetime decreased to 40sec (from 60sec)
- The Tesla's use rates and win rates don't show it as being overpowered; however, another of core design principles is that all cards should have weaknesses and counters, whereas the Tesla doesn't clearly have any. A lower hit speed will reduce its DPS versus bigger targets significantly, and also make it more vulnerable to groups of troops.

Cannon: Lifetime decreased to 30sec (from 40sec)
- The Cannon offers a bit too much defensive power and value for 3 Elixir. A lower lifetime will reduce its staying power.

Princess: Hitpoints decreased by 10%
- When playing with Tournament Rule card levels, as a baseline we think Arrows should be able take out the Princess for an even Elixir trade. This hitpoint reduction ensures that’s the case. Additionally, the Princess has a very high use rate and could do with some added vulnerability overall.

Ice Wizard: Damage increased by 5%
- The Ice Wizard's main strength is control, but he could do with a little bit of extra damage to increase his value and make him more of a threat.

Prince: Charge speed decreased by 13%
- The Prince is currently the most used card in the game, but despite very popular opinion, he isn't overpowered when looking at his win rates. However, his ability to take down a tower on his own when left unchecked can be quite startling. Slowing down his charge speed a notch will give more time to react and counter.

Dark Prince: Charge speed decreased by 13%
- Both Princes ride the same breed of horse, and therefore it makes perfect sense that they move at the same speed!

Valkyrie: Hitpoints and damage increased by 10%
- The Valkyrie's use rates are quite low, as she still needs to find her place in the world. More damage and health should help her get there.

Royal Giant: Damage increased by 20%
- The Royal Giant's use rates and win rates are very low, showing that he is clearly underpowered. We wanted to give him significantly more damage, instead of boosting his hitpoints, so he could fulfill his dreams of becoming a wrecking ball.

Giant: Damage increased by 5%
- Giving the Giant a bit more damage, instead of hitpoints, will make him a more compelling choice overall, without making him any more potent on defense.

Rage: Gives 40% movement and attack speed boost (from 35%), duration decreased by 20%
- Rage can be an exciting and surprising card to see in action, but it's currently not quite strong enough to make the cut in most decks. By increasing the boost to 40% and lowering the duration, Rage will be a more intense and stronger offensive tool overall.

Poison: Damage increased by 5%
- Poison has fairly low use rates. A bit of damage over time will make it a more interesting choice next to Fireball and the other damage spells.

Mirror: Legendary Cards mirrored 1 level lower
- The Mirror is creating Legendary Cards at a disproportionately high level (slightly). After this change a level 5 Mirror will make a level 2 Legendary Card, and so on.

Three Musketeers: Cost decreased to 9 (from 10)
- Three Musketeers have a very low use rate. 9 Elixir will make them better value and less risk, hopefully increasing their allure.

Archers: Quicker initial attack (like Spear Goblins)
- The Archers' use rate falls off after the early game, while the Spear Goblins remain popular across all levels. We’re making their initial attack quicker, so they'll feel more responsive and effective.

Balloon: Hitpoints increased by 5%
- The Balloon has low use rates at the top, and many enemies (buildings!). More hitpoints should help it get to those towers!

Witch: Damage increased by 5%
- The Witch has very low use rates at the top. She needs a bit more damage to become relevant again.

Cards

What are Cards?

In Clash Royale, Cards are everything. Because Clash Royale game is like battle-collectible-cards game. Your cards are your troops, spells and buildings. You use cards to battle your friend and enemy.

Card Rarity

1) COMMON (dark grey color)

Basic card of the game is COMMON card. Easiest and cheapest to obtain. While COMMON cards have little flashy element compared to RARE and EPIC, they can serve well as the backbone to your battle deck. Unless you plan to spend lots of Gems in the game, COMMON cards will be your best friends.

COMMON Archers
COMMON Card, Example: Archers

2) RARE (orange color)

Middle rarity, a little harder to obtain than COMMON but far easier to collect than EPIC. Many RARE cards are powerful and provide strong addition to your battle tactics.

RARE Giant
RARE Cards are 10 times rarer than COMMON Cards.

3) EPIC (purple color)

EPIC cards are EPIC, enough said! They are called EPIC in many ways: EPIC power, EPIC expensive cost, EPIC moment when you open from the chest. EPIC cards are powerful early on, but without Gems support, EPIC cards will fall behind on card upgrade compared to COMMON and RARE. EPIC rarity cannot give away/obtained via Card Donation.

EPIC Baby Dragon
EPIC Cards are 20 times rarer than RARE Cards.

4) LEGENDARY (rainbow color)

LEGENDARY cards are extremely special card, it has hexagonal shape instead of normal rectangular. It is not available to buy in the Shop and no guarantee in any Chest. Therefore, you have to rely on your luck to get LEGENDARY card from opening the Chest.

LEGENDARY Card, Example: Ice Wizard
LEGENDARY Cards are 20 times rarer than EPIC Cards.

Obtaining Card

Cards can be obtained in 3 ways.
1) Open the Chest
2) Buy from Shop (using Gold)
3) Receive from other Clan member (via Clan Donation)

Card Upgrade

Copies of the same card will be accumulated. Certain card level require certain number of card copies to be upgraded, Gold is also needed to upgrade the card. Higher level of card will require more number of cards to upgrade, same is true with gold amount.

For example, you need 100 card copies and 1,000 Gold to upgrade COMMON to level 7 while need 200 card copies and 2,000 Gold to upgrade COMMON to level 8.

Card Collection

Second tab is Card tab, there is “Card Collection” section showing all of your cards. At present, there are 48 cards to be collected. Collecting certain number of cards unlock the Achievement. There are icon notifications at Card tab to show when you unlock new card and when you have card upgrade available.

Battle Deck

In the Card tab, there is another section called “Battle Deck”. You choose 8 cards from your collection to form your Battle Deck which will be used to battle with you friend and enemy. At the top right, there is “Average Elixir” to show you the average amount of Elixir of your Battle Deck. It is the rough indicator of how easy/difficult you can spend Elixir during battle. The ballpark number is between 3.7 and 4.3.

Supercell first started developing games for tablets in 2011, and we haven't looked back for a second.  Smoosh together all the best parts of gaming from consoles and PCs, add mobility along with a new touch UI and — BOOM — tablets have emerged as today's ultimate games platform.

The best games on any platform are those designed specifically for that platform.  Tablet First means we focus all of our energy and passion on creating, from scratch, the absolute best experience possible for the tablet – our primary target platform.  No compromises.

When Steve Jobs first introduced the iPad to a very skeptical world, he called it “magical”.  We now know what he meant.  Our inspired vision is to create some magic of our own that lives up to the awesome potential of these wondrous devices.
